The first of four parts in Suzanne Collins‘ massively popular three-book series The Hunger Games, about two dozen children randomly chosen to compete for survival, opens March 23 on more than 4,000 screens across the country (as with Twilight and Harry Potter, the final book will be split into two films). The film’s reception could determine whether its stars — Jennifer Lawrence, 21; Josh Hutcherson, 19; and Liam Hemsworth, 22 — ascend to Kristen Stewart-Robert Pattinson-Taylor Lautner superstardom and fill the gap opening as Twilight heads toward its final chapter.
“After the trailer launched Nov. 14, we had 8 million views in the first 24 hours,” says Lionsgate Films president Joe Drake. “We were the number one Twitter trend on the planet. Since then, the book sales have jumped 7.5 million copies. That kind of data gives us enormous confidence.”
The release of The Hunger Games is still a couple of months away, but star Jennifer Lawrence and director Gary Ross are already looking ahead to the second installment, Catching Fire. Based on the bestselling book series, the story takes place in a dystopian future where Lawrence stars as Katniss, a young woman who must survive a televised fight to the death between her and teenagers from the other districts of Panem. Anticipation for The Hunger Games is at a fever pitch, and Lionsgate is already moving quickly on the film adaptation of the sequel.
Lawrence and Ross recently spoke a bit about the follow-up, revealing that training starts in July and they may be filming quite a bit of Catching Fire in Hawaii. Hit the jump for more. Beware, spoilers for Catching Fire (and therefore The Hunger Games) follow after the jump.
Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy is hard at work on the Catching Fire script, and Ross is attached to return. Speaking with EW, Ross said that he’s looking forward to portraying the rise of Katniss as a leader in Catching Fire:
“I love the title Catching Fire because from the moment Katniss was willing to eat the berries, the moment she was willing to give her life for something larger than herself, she set off a chain reaction that was at once bigger than her and also because of her. That’s a very exciting movie to make because you’re seeing the emergence of a leader. It’s the birth of a revolution so it has context that’s larger than just the Games themselves.”
Lawrence herself can’t wait to get back to the series, and revealed that she begins training again in July. A fall shoot for Catching Fire is expected, and Lawrence said that they may be shooting the film in Hawaii. I was wondering how they planned on capturing the epic environment for the Games in the second book, and Hawaii seems an excellent fit for a location stand-in. I already can’t wait to see how the various challenges within the Games are presented onscreen.
My only concern with Catching Fire is that there’s so much material and so many larger set pieces than The Hunger Games. I’m afraid of what will have to be lost or cut out for time. Lionsgate has optioned a total of four movies for the three-book series, so it’s assumed that one of the books will be split in half. While Catching Fire could benefit from a two-film adaptation, good money is on the finale, Mockingjay. Nevertheless, we’ve still got the first film to get to. The Hunger Games opens March 23rd, and Catching Fire is set for release on November 22nd, 2013.
A new Hunger Games still plus the final poster has been released. You can check both of them out in our gallery. It looks amazing!

Organizers of the People’s Choice Awards have announced that The Hunger Games trio Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth will be appearing at the awards show on January 11th.
The announcement came via Twitter on Wednesday, and details of their appearance are not known at this time. It’s possible they could be presenting an award or — dare fans hope? — maybe even a new exclusive sneak peek at The Hunger Games movie! It’s also possible they are simply attending the awards show and will sit quietly in the audience doing nothing of particular interest.
The Hunger Games is, obviously, not up for any awards since the movie isn’t out yet. But Lawrence is nominated for “Favorite Superhero” for her performance in X-Men: First Class. That movie is also nominated in two other categories: “Favorite Action Movie” and “Favorite Ensemble Movie Cast.”
Hey everyone! I just added two more stills from The Hunger Games plus replaced one of our low quality stills with a new higher quality one as well. Check them out!
